The Tozando Jo (4.21 shaku / 127,6 cm, 8 bu / 24,5 mm) is made of high quality Hokkaido oak, respecting tradition. The Jo has been part of the Japanese Buddhist tradition for hundreds of years, and in addition to aikido, it is an essential training tool in many koryu sword schools. Its simple form conceals a profound training in technique, timing and distance control.
Jo’s design dates back to the early 1600s, the time when Muso Gonnosuke met Miyamoto Musashi. Based on this history, the established length and thickness have remained part of the tradition, and the Tozando Jo is also made to these same strict standards. The well-balanced construction supports correct trajectory, accurate striking and smooth handling.
Hokkaido oak is a dense and durable material that feels stiff but lively in the hand. It stands up well to repeated training and will retain its shape with proper maintenance. The careful finishing ensures a comfortable grip without unnecessary slipperiness.
